Van Dyke’s chapter is titled “On Readers and Books.”

This poem is extracted from an article on The Dedication of Makemie Memorial Park and Monument and appears on p. 369.

Van Dyke’s contribution to his novel appears in Chapter 12.

Originally written in 1907, and first published in The Poetry of Henry Van Dyke (1911) under the title “Hymn of Joy,” it was published in 1914 as “The Hyman of Joy,” but it more popularly known as “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee.” It is one of Van Dyke’s most widely-known compositions.
